Twitter facing linguistic challange
Just a while ago I registered myself at Twitter in order to get familiar with this new online service. It looks like a mini blog, and the similar type of function is also available at Facebook. I use Twitter as a tool of language practice, writing some tweets in Finnish. It is much better to start small, with a baby step.
Twitter has tried to make its service available in several languages, including Japanese. A large number of participants have actively been twittering or following others in Japanese. Amazing, but I am also wondering if or how much Twitter is concerned with cultural/linguistic differences. For instance, a message should be made within 140 characters regardless of languages. The contents of a single message as well as its amount vary among languages. What I can write within 140 characters in a certain language is nearly impossible in another one under the same charcter limit.
Considering this structural restraint in message production, I assume that the Japanese users enjoy Twitter in different communication styles and purposes than people do in other languages though Twitter itself seems to be gaining popularity in an universal manner.
